# RATE_LIMIT_EXCEEDED

> 429 — a rate-limit window for your API key on this endpoint is exhausted.

**HTTP status:** `429` · **Code:** `RATE_LIMIT_EXCEEDED`

## Example

```json theme={null}
{
  "type": "RATE_LIMIT",
  "code": "RATE_LIMIT_EXCEEDED",
  "description": "Too many requests. Please slow down.",
  "requestId": "0HNP2MAV4BUCG:00000004",
  "docUrl": "https://docs.telemax.com.au/errors/rate-limit-exceeded"
}
```

## Cause

Limits apply per API key and per endpoint, in four fixed windows (per second, minute, hour and day). A request over any of them is rejected, not queued. The response carries `Retry-After` and the `X-RateLimit-*` headers, and no `X-API-Version`.

## What to do

Wait `Retry-After` seconds before retrying. It is the length of the exhausted window (`1`, `60`, `3600` or `86400`), so waiting that long always clears that window. If another window is also used up, the retry gets a new `429` with that window's `Retry-After`; wait again. See [Rate limiting](/v2/request-response#rate-limiting) for the limits of each endpoint.

See [Error handling](/v2/errors) for the full error model.
